EMILY

Emily was the poor girl in our class,
She smelt a bit and wore untidy wear,
She bore the jokes and criticisms so crass,
And the teachers seemed not at all to care.
Though she came late to school oft bruised and lame,
By her drunken Farther beaten red and raw,
She was punished by the head with bamboo cane,
After waiting in the 'punishment line' at his door.
It was common knowledge, why she was often late,
The chores she had to do were much and cruel,
But never once did she, this cause relate,
And all the teachers cared about was rule.
So all who want such discipline returned,
Should, by the fate of Emily, be concerned.
