MEMORIES

We shared a house with our cousins and Aunt and Uncle. We milked a Jersey herd separating the cream from the milk which was picked up from our roadside milk stand by the daily milk truck. We often got a lift with the milk truck into town to go to the "pictures" (movies) every country town had its picture theatre.

A creek ran through the property and we had of course our 'private' swimming hole. We also made canoes out of corrugated iron and sealed them up with pitch. Unfortunately they were washed away in the floods, but up until then they provided much joy. There were lots of fruit trees on the place, oranges, pears, mandarins and plumbs, and we had a small apple orchard. We had a two acre vegetable patch, which proved valuable as the rains came and wiped out the 15 acres of peas. We were very disappointed as well as broke, and I spent a lot of time recalling those long days behind the dropper, trying to keep the horses straight along the furrows. Prince was much stronger than Dolly, so tended to surge forward, pulling everything out of line.

We spent many good days riding around the hills, and I hunted a lot, but not to kill, I used to creep up on Kangaroos and even the odd Dingo and delight in not having been detected. Near the barn was a giant Fig tree, and I almost made it my home, leaping around like a Monkey on the massive limbs... sweet memories; they were hard times but most satisfying.
