WHO KNOWS?

Is it not belief in invisible Gods
That shapes the rumpled Earth?
Across the enduring plain
With complicated turf?

Who mixed our tongues to stop us
Challenging for the throne,
To prevent our minds from knowing
What God has always known?

Religion is all dividing,
a kaleidoscopic set of views;
prejudice providing
selecting special pews

Yet none with all their claiming
can show a grain of proof
that the god that they are naming
is a God of simple truth.

Countless little churches,
Flying different flags,
Competing with their searches
To claim the upper crags.

Their doctrines are aggressive,
Conflicting and corrupt,
Dictatorial and possessive,
Self serving and abrupt

All who oppose are "sinners",
Or at least are lesser folk,
Or perhaps just 'beginners'
'Cause they think it all a joke!

Their arrogance is monumental,
For only they do know
That what is coincidental
Was designed for so and so.

So I ask all God's believers,
If I take away your books,
What reference then receive us
From your vacant puzzled looks,

For it seems to me life happens
Whether we believe or not,
Without the segregation
Each with his little plot,

For without the world's religions
What would we fight about?
Throughout the different regions,
Who would we kick and clout?

Kaleidoscopic Adam,
What language did he speak
What was his age when he was born,
A month? A year? A week?

Whence came the dark skinned Negro,
The Abo and the chink,
The Viking and Apache,
From Adam do you think?

Or were they all from Noah
Since all before him drowned,
Or from a profusive sower,
The greatest lover crowned

I seek not to blaspheme,
(another religious word)
but to point out there are some
who think the church absurd.

Some need to see some proof
That what is taught is right,
For beneath no common roof,
There is no shared

All religions can't be right
But they can all be wrong,
For what is black and white
Fits not one sacred song.

So believe what you believe
And go your chosen way
Lest you yourself deceive
And He to whom you pray
