THEY MARCHED DOWN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET

The Tet offensive had failed all over the south;
A general uprising never occurred.
The US Embassy was not entered, despite media mouth,
For their reporting was in haste and absurd.
But the political palisade created by them,
Exposed the veteran soldier to blame
For it protected a government, shackled and lost,
From a general public who knew of their shame.
So the warriors of war suffered the conflict of peace
That they had thought they had battled to keep;
And governments stood by and let it increase
Until it was time to revive it from sleep
By declaring a day to welcome them home....
And they marched down the middle of the street.
